Influencer and Ronaldo WAG Georgina Rodriguez has come under fire for holding a Hermes Birkin bag giveaway just hours after singer Jane Birkin’s death.
The 29-year-old Spaniard announced the competition to her 50 million Instagram followers on 19th July and has kept the post up, despite the flood of criticism.
The post shows the Argentine-born model holding up the bag in question while surrounded by pricey Gucci and Louis Vuitton accessories.
She wrote: “GIVEAWAY, 1 Signed Birkin Bag, & many other Luxury prizes as seen!”
However, her post was quickly shared on another social media platform with the caption: “Georgina raffling a Birkin just 24 hours after Jane’s death.”
Comments left by netizens included “Inappropriateness is always untimely”, “How shocking, really”, and “Vulgar”.
Despite this, legions of the influencer’s fans took part in the giveaway and gave her post countless “likes”.
In a recent interview, Georgina, who has three children with footie ace Cristiano Ronaldo, confessed to owning no fewer than 150 bags.
She told how the Birkins, which she has in every colour, are her favourites among her vast collection.
The now-legendary handbags were born from a chance encounter between former Hermes chairman Jean-Louis Dumas and Jane Birkin.
Dumas once saw how the singer was visibly annoyed after all of her belongings fell out of her straw basket and immediately proposed designing a bag for her.
The bags, which typically flog for USD 10,000 (GBP 7,800) to USD 40,000 (GBP 31,000), quickly became a symbol of wealth and exclusivity after their introduction in 1984.
Birkin bags have also been sported by the likes of Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez.
Georgina’s partner, Portugal international Ronaldo, currently plays as a forward for Al Nassr FC in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
London-born Jane Birkin was famous for her tumultuous relationship with popular French singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg in the late 1960s and 70s.
However, she was a popular singer, actress, and model in her own right, and was widely known for her vocals on the 1967 hit “Je t’aime… moi non plus”.
Birkin, 76, was found dead at her home in Paris, France, on 16th July from “natural causes”.
