Former Wimbledon champ Garbine Muguruza has announced that she is getting married to a fan who asked her for a selfie on the street.
The 29-year-old tennis player will tie the knot with her boyfriend of nearly two years, model Arthur Borges, who has 10,200 followers on Instagram.
The 2017 Wimbledon winner met her groom-to-be by chance when he asked her for a selfie in New York City, USA, in August 2021.
The former WTA world number one told American media: “My hotel was close to Central Park and I was bored, so I thought I should go for a walk.
“I go out and I run into him on the street. Suddenly, he turns and says, ‘Good luck at the US Open.’ I was left thinking, ‘Wow, he’s so handsome.'”
Muguruza, who competes for Spain, revealed that she and Borges continued meeting each other and often went on walks around Central Park.
After embarking on a relationship, Borges finally popped the question while down on one knee in Marbella, Spain.
Muguruza, who has 881,000 followers on Instagram, recalled: “It felt weird. I was thinking something else and then when he proposed I started crying.
“I didn’t know how to react. I said yes in the midst of tears, it was very romantic.”
The Venezuela-born tennis player said their ceremony will be held somewhere close to the beach in Spain and will take place in the coming year.
Her husband-to-be was born in Spain but largely grew up in Finland. He was working for Tom Ford in New York City when he met Muguruza.
The two-time Grand Slam winner said: “He’s a mix, like me. I’m half-Venezuelan and half-Spanish, so we understand each other.
“We share that feeling of being citizens of the world.”
Muguruza, who also won the Tour Finals in 2021, is currently ranked 132 in singles by the WTA. She played her last pro match at the Lyon Open, France, in January.
