Real Housewives Star And Disbarred Lawyer Husband Held By ICE After USD 5K Supermarket Theft Arrest

This is the moment South African reality TV couple Mel and Peet Viljoen are arrested by police in the US before later being transferred to immigration detention.

The incident took place in Boca Raton, Palm Beach County, Florida, United States, on 10th March.

Bodycam footage shows officers detaining the pair from separate locations after stopping a black Range Rover linked to an alleged organised retail theft investigation.

The video shows Peet Viljoen being stopped and questioned before being pulled out as officers move in to detain him during the traffic stop.

Footage then shows officers at a building, where Mel Viljoen is detained in a room and is escorted along a corridor with her hands handcuffed behind her back by police.

Mel Viljoen, who appeared on Real Housewives of Pretoria, and her husband Peet Viljoen were taken into custody by Boca Raton police following allegations they shoplifted goods worth more than USD 5,000 (GBP 3,750) from a Publix store over several months.

Police said the couple were identified through surveillance footage and transaction records, with investigators alleging they used a method known as “ticket switching”, scanning cheaper barcodes while taking higher-value items.

The video shows both individuals being detained separately before being taken into custody and was later widely circulated on social media.

Following their arrest, both were booked into the Palm Beach County Main Detention Center, with bail set at USD 10,000 (GBP 7,500) each.

Reports state that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials subsequently took custody of the pair while they were in police detention.

ICE records indicate that Peet Viljoen is being held at the Florida Soft Side South detention facility, while Mel Viljoen is being held at the Broward Transitional Centre.

Authorities said the couple had overstayed their tourist visas, which typically allow a stay of up to six months.

Under US immigration procedures, non-citizens may be detained to ensure their presence at immigration proceedings or possible removal from the country.

The case remains ongoing.
