The husband of a young and beautiful influencer and mother to their two little children has been arrested for attempted murder after he kept changing his story about how she ended up with a gaping hole in her chest.

Mother of two Soukaina El Basri, 30, was rushed to hospital in Biella, Italy, with a severe injury after losing a lot of blood last Thursday, 16th May.

Her husband, 36-year-old Jonathan Maldonado, phoned paramedics that evening and reportedly told them she had accidentally fallen and hurt herself on the edge of a chest of drawers.

Soukaina reportedly confirmed his words before passing out moments later.

She was swiftly moved to a hospital and placed in intensive care, where she currently remains in a medically-induced coma.

But doctors who examined her said the hole in her chest did not match Maldonado’s story. There were no bruises surrounding the injury either which would typically occur during such a hard fall.

They reportedly believe it is much more likely to have been caused by a sharp weapon.

Later, when police questioned Maldonado, who was the only person at home at the time of the incident, he reportedly began to claim his wife had attempted to self-harm which is how she got wounded.

But investigators did not find that story plausible either.

During the search of the home, they found blood splattered everywhere and later arrested Maldonado for attempted murder.

Prosecutor Teresa Angela Camelio said: “The hypothesis of an accidental fall or a self-inflicted injury is not consistent with the evidence we have gathered.”

Maldonado was detained during a visit to the hospital on 22nd May when he got into a row with the victim’s family, who believe he physically assaulted Soukaina.

They claim the young woman, who is of Morrocan origin, wanted to get a divorce, which they believe is what led to the attempted killing.

An unnamed friend also told local media: “She couldn’t take it anymore; she wanted a divorce, but he blackmailed her because they have two daughters.”

Further investigation has reportedly suggested a history of domestic violence as Soukaina had reported her husband for abuse in March 2023.

An expert analysis is yet to confirm whether Soukaina’s current chest wound is compatible with a bladed weapon.

Maldonado, meanwhile, maintains he is innocent.

The couple wed in 2018 and have two daughters together, aged five and six.

Soukaina, known as Siu to her 80,000 Instagram followers, would often post images of their daily family life.

The young model, who has made a living by advertising various beauty products on social media, remains in critical condition at the hospital.

The investigation is ongoing.
